Mathew Shaw and Savanna Shaw are a father-daughter musical duo from Utah. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, they initiated the release of music videos, singing from the comfort of their homes. Much to their amazement, their videos went viral. They racked up millions of views and became an instant favorite among viewers, thanks to their beautiful renditions of some popular songs. According to Jon Caramanica, a music critic for the New York Times, the father and daughter duo "became a quarantine-era YouTube success story" for their acoustic duets of religious-themed tunes that were "pinpoint precise, verging on stern."
The father and daughter tandem's road to fame was not intentional at all. It started during the pandemic when Savanna was unable to practice with her choir during the initial lockdown. She decided to start sharing her rehearsal videos online, so she made an Instagram account. Her timidity prompted her to ask her dad to come along. They started singing "The Prayer" online in February of that year. Unexpectedly, it went viral after being posted on Facebook. They started their channel the following month and regularly uploaded videos for several months.
The duo started working on their debut album right after they went popular. In October, they released the 13-track album "Picture It." Later, it became a commercial and critical success, topping the charts in two categories on Billboard's Emerging Artists and Classical Albums charts. The following year, in 2021, they issued two more albums: "Stand By Me" and "The Joy for Christmas," both titled "Merry Little Christmas."
