The musical opens with Anna Mae Bullock singing in the community church, much to her mother, Zelma’s embarrassment, and unable to take a difficult relationship anymore, Zelma walks out, taking her eldest daughter Aline, with her, and leaving Gran Georgeanna to bring up Anna Mae. A few years later, Anna Mae is invited to join her mother and sister in St Louis. Alline introduces Anna Mae to the nightlife, and she eventually crosses paths with Ike Turner and his band.

One night Anna Mae joins Ike on stage to sing, and the success of the performance leads Ike to ask Zelma if Anna Mae can join his band, under the stage name Tina Turner. After numerous successful tours, Ike pops the question to Tina, who enjoys playing music with him, is also concealing a romance with another band member, and despite expecting Raymond’s child, Tina agrees to marry Ike. Despite Ike’s infidelities and violence, Tina continues to perform with his band. Eventually, during a recording contract, Ike grows angry with the recording studio’s wish to record Tina solo. A violent encounter follows a performance in which Tina walks out battered, bruised and bloody, and she spends the night in a hotel.

Now performing in Las Vegas with her new manager, Rhonda. But the two are struggling, since Ike claims ownership of all the songs from the “Ike & Tina Revue,” and given that Tina is getting close to 40, no record labels want to sign a black woman. Finally, Tina meets the young Australian music producer and enthusiast Roger Davies, who re-invents her by going into rock and roll, and since the labels will not sign her, they decide to promote by her through touring performances in the United States. Tina’s new performances are a success, and Capitol Records begs to sign with them, and Tina agrees, but on her own terms.

Zelma is on her deathbed, and Alline has just arrived. Zelma requests that Tina and Ike get back together when she sees her in the hospital, but Ike storms out of the hospital after failing to apologize to Tina, and Zelma passes away shortly after.
