Some Like It Hot at Eccles Theater

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws comparisons to another award winning Broadway musical, Chicago. Jazz elements fill the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians working to survive on speakeasy shows. Their lives face an unexpected twist when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled speakeasy and need to begin cross-dressing to protect their identities from the mob. 

Joe reinvents himself as Josephine, while Jerry disguises himself as Daphne and the two join an all-female swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a integral part of their tale as the two men try to romance her without getting caught. The growth each character faces many tests of their strengths and teaches them valuable lessons about themselves. 

If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway adaptation of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred the legendary Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The film was based on the 1953 French film Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most culturally relevant movies in American cinema. The movie took home three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was chosen to be in the first class of 25 movies chosen by the US National Film Registry for preservation.

The film's impressive success led it to become the basis for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and even various stage productions in the 1990s. Then on to the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences can't get enough of the show and hurry to secure tickets for showings at George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater and other theaters. "Some Like It Hot" features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the creative minds behind other hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The show includes energetic dance numbers and catchy songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for their recording of the show's soundtrack.
