Some Like It Hot at Eccles Theater

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws comparisons to another award winning Broadway show, Chicago. Jazz elements influence the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians trying to survive on speakeasy gigs. Their lives face a comical turn twist when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled speakeasy and need to disguise themselves as female musicians to protect their identities from the mob. 

Joe takes on the persona of Josephine, while Jerry disguises himself as Daphne and the two join an all-female swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a challenging part of their story as the two men try to earn her affection without blowing their cover. The journey each character tests their strengths and teaches them surprising lessons about themselves. 

If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway reenactment of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred prolific actors Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The film was based on the 1953 French film Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most culturally relevant movies of any generation. The movie won three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was chosen to be in the first class of 25 films chosen by the US National Film Registry to preserve for future generations.

The movies notable success led it to become the basis for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and even various stage productions in the 1990s. Then on to the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences express fanfare over the show and rush to secure tickets for performances at George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater and others across the country. "Some Like It Hot" features showtunes by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the hitmakers behind numerous hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The musical includes dazzling dance numbers and truely lovable songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for their recording of the show's soundtrack.
