Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s modern mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After penning the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to accoladed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the duo polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would graduate from its modest beginnings to a sought-after spot on Broadway and other much-loved stages in London and Canada, making it a world-wide success.

Join us in the Underworld, where Hades runs a profitable but harsh factory called Hadestown. The subterranean workers perform their unceasing duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their autonomy. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a passionate courtship above ground, despite the tribulations of winter’s famine.

Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground longings. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the alluring suggestions of the Fates, longs for the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually finds herself in the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for survival.

Her contract snares her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an embittered Hades, pressured by his disquieted workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for all time?

In 2019, the musical won 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and sold-out audiences demonstrate the play’s resonance with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
