Deep Purple are known for being pioneers of hard rock and were part of the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-Seventies" alongside fellow British bands Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The band was formed in 1968 as a prog rock outfit and the following year the band settled on its most commercially successful, "Mark II", line-up of Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards, backing vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), who performed together from 1969 to 1973. From 1970, the band cultivated a heavier hard rock sound and in 1972 at London's Rainbow Theatre they made the Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band". Deep Purple is widely considered to be one of rock music's most influential groups and they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide to date, including 8.5 million certified units in the US.
