PLOT
One stormy night, a poor lady knocks on the prince’s castle. She has a single rose to offer in exchange for shelter, but the spoiled prince winces at her appearance and casts her away. The poor lady transforms into an enchantress and casted a powerful spell, turning the prince into a beast and his servants into objects. The enchantress then declares that only true love’s kiss can break this spell. The rose is put in an hourglass and the day the last petal falls, the curse will be permanent. Years passed, a villager named Maurice hides in the castle grounds while running away from wolves. The castle’s rose garden caught his attention thereby causing the man to plush a single rose to give to his daughter Belle. But he was caught by Beast and held captive. BACKGROUND
The production premiered on Broadway in 1994 following a short try out run in Houston the previous year. The musical was spearheaded by Disney CEO Michael Esner who wants to bring the magic of Disney’s animated films to the stage. The story, originally based from the fairy tale novel with the same title by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont was brought to life with the leadership of book writer Josiah Hall, and original Beauty and the Beast music composer Alan Menken, lyricist Tim Rice, and Howard Ashman. In 1994, the production opened on Broadway with direction and choreography by Matt West.
The production went on to become the sixth longest running Broadway musical of all time. Beauty and the Beast also went on numerous tours across the globe, including a West End production in 1997. In 2025, the production went on its fifth US Tour. Overall, Beauty and the Beast has grossed over $1.7 billion in ticket sales since its premier over thirty years ago.

AWARDS
Beauty and the Beast secured many accolades following its New York premier. The musical received a total of nine Tony nominations including a nomination for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. In the end, the production was triumphant in securing the win for Tony Award for Best Costume Design. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, the musical received ten nominations. In 1998, the West End production in London received three Laurence Olivier nominations, and won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

CREATIVE TEAM
Being the very first theatrical project from Disney, the team behind the production made sure to bring in the most outstanding talented showmakers in the Broadway circuit. This includes an incredible design team comprising Stanley A. Meyer on scenic design, Tony Award winning costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, Tony winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, Grammy nominated musical supervisor Michael Kosarin, and Tony nominated sound designer John Shivers. The creative team brought this outstanding project to life, focusing on illusions, costumes, stage effects. Meanwhile, the music from Alan Menken with eight songs from the film were brought to life and totally revamped and rearranged for the stage. There’s a combination of classic hits from the film and new songs within the musical.
