In 1977, Styx made their phenomenal commercial breakthrough in the U.S. Their 1977 album The Grand Illusion, their seventh studio release, entered the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. Peaking at number 6, the album eventually sold over three million copies in the U.S., earning a three-time platinum certification. This was the beginning of the band’s incredible fame in the U.S. Their following releases were also met with high praises. Subsequent releases like Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, and Paradise all sold three million copies each in the U.S. Their 1979 single, “Babe” from Cornerstone, was their first ever song to peak at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, their 1981 effort, Paradise Theatre, was their first-ever album to top the Billboard 200.

Throughout the ‘80s, the band had consistently stayed in the U.S. charts with their iconic singles. Their 1983 hits, “Mr. Roboto” and “Don’t Let It End,” and peaked at number 3 and 6. Meanwhile, unprecedented singles, such as “High Time,” “Music Time,” and “Love is the Ritual,” maintained the band’s standing on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1990, Styx released another major hit, “Show Me the Way,” which landed at number 3 on the U.S. charts.
