The Chinese performing arts company, Shen Yun, comes to Eccles Theater On Thursday, February, 23rd, 2023. Seven performing arts companies comprise the make-up of Shen Yun Performing Arts. With nearly a total of 480 performers, the sizeable entertaining and touring company was formed in 2006, as a non-profit performing arts and entertainment company. Based in the United States, touring internationally, as well as widely across the United States, they generally perform symphonic concerts and dance routines, heavily reliant on the old Chinese cultures and traditions, and are reminiscent of life in pre-Communist rule. The whole conglomerate of companies has toured more than 130 cities internationally and boasts a viewing of over 10 million people.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Company comprises seven performing arts companies, each touring company boasts about 40 male and female dancers, totaling nearly 480 musicians, dancers and acrobats. Their performances are heavily reliant on old Chinese customs and classical Chinese traditional dance routines and acrobatics, making extensive use of tumbling and acrobatic techniques, reminiscent of life in the pre-communist Era.

The performing arts company, based in the United States, as a non-profit arts and entertainment company. The Shen Yun was founded in 2006, touring the States fairly widely and internationally. Nearly 10 million viewers, in 130 cities across Europe, North America, and Asia, have seen these performers.

The company stated that its purpose is to try to revive some of the old Chinese culture and traditions. However, the performances have not been without their share of controversy. The performances of 2018 and 2019 drew some attention in that some performances included lyrics and digital displays and negative views toward evolution, atheism, and homosexuality. Audience and critical comments felt they promoted sectarian doctrines viewers commented and complained that the shows were misrepresented and the advertising of the shows "felt more like propaganda than the expected straightforwardly presentation of a cultural heritage". The Chinese government considers the group to be an "anti-society cult", and has banned Shen Yun from performing in China.
