As a non-profit performing arts and entertainment company, based in the United States, the Shen Yun Performing Arts Company was founded in 2006. Touring the States fairly widely and internationally, the company performs old and traditional dance routines and acrobatics along-side symphony concerts.

Shen Yun comprises seven performing arts companies, each touring company boasts about 40 male and female dancers, totaling nearly 480 musicians and performers, routinely performing mainly old traditional and classical Chinese dance routines, making extensive use of tumbling and acrobatic techniques. Since 2010, Shen Yun has performed in front of nearly 10 million viewers and has toured more than 130 cities across Europe, North America, and Asia.

The company stated that its purpose is to try to revive some of the old Chinese culture and traditions from the time before Communist rule. The performances of 2018 and 2019 were quite controversial, in that some performances included lyrics and digital displays, which attracted negative responses. Audience and critical comments felt they promoted sectarian doctrines, and negative views toward evolution, atheism, and homosexuality.

The Chinese government considers the group to be an "anti-society cult", and has banned Shen Yun from performing in China. Quite a few viewers commented and complained that the show was misrepresented and the advertising of the show "felt more like propaganda than the expected straightforwardly presentation of a cultural heritage".
